Way of Shadow

Every physical model I am aware of describes shadow as an absence of light, an area shielded from the radiation of a light source. But throughout history darkness and shadow has held a special place in the collective unconscious. For many shadows trigger fear of the unknown, the unknowable. They have been personified and anthropomorphized and given attributes beyond a mere physical description. So what then is the truth? Well we can go with the droll explanation that physical objects block light to project shadow. It’s simple enough and would seem to describe the phenomena well enough, but could we imagine something more fun?

What if shadow was the source of matter, and it projected some sort of force which interacts with light to form solid matter? Solid shades as it were. Don’t think about it too hard, as it is counter intuitive toward the way we were taught to think. However if you wish to lean into the personification of shadows this is a model that you can use. You would become a being of solid shadow that is controlled by the shadows you see near you. Your center of consciousness would be located at the center of peak mixing between light an shadow. While this model might not be very useful for physics calculations it may be helpful for those of you who engage in magickal thinking, especially in regards to darkness. In many traditions we are taught that we are beings of light, but what if that is just a choice? What if your shadow is your closest and truest friend, a faithful companion that works in synch with you to allow you to be the material being that you are. What if you mentally give your shadow permission to diverge from your expectations? You might be surprised at what you begin to notice as you shift your attention from the light to the shadow.

Greet your shadow, think of it as both part of you and a partner. Give it license to aid you as you go about your day and stay in touch. At the very least the shift in perspective may yield some interesting new ideas to contemplate and meditate on.
