Jorge Luis Borges’s Library Of Babel envisions a library containing all the information in the universe, including gibberish (noise). However gibberish is subjective. ASCII and Assembly Language would be incomprehensible to someone who lived before the concept of Zero was introduced. There are plenty of people that don’t understand them now. And yet information is encapsulated in them.

The characters of the English language (those accursed 26) can theoretically represent any piece of information by giving things names and descriptions and describing their behaviour. A character to word, or concept model can also do this so long as you can imagine new characters for new words. Languages such as mandarin avoid unreasonable amounts of characters and words to be understood for literacy/fluency by combining words to make new concepts, much like roots, prefixes and suffixes in English.

However just because something appears unintelligible does not mean that there was not intent put into it, and sheer chance can deliver information that no being ever intended to send. One being’s signal may be another’s noise, and vice versa. Only through experiences can we recognize the patterns in our apparently random universe. Is our organization efforts and expressions in space and time significant or just more noise?
